Sexual Orientation Discrimination
Missouri Anti-Discrimination Laws
Under certain circumstances, the law prevents employers from discriminating against employees on the basis of their sexual orientation. For example, public sector employees in Missouri are protected from sexual orientation discrimination by an executive order signed by Governor Jay Nixon on July 9, 2010. The order bans sexual orientation discrimination in all employment-related activities, including layoffs, hiring, training, recruiting, promotions, benefits, transfers, termination, demotions, and salary or wages.
In Illinois, the law prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, which is defined to include actual or perceived heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, or gender-related identity, whether or not traditionally associated with the person's designated sex at birth.
Currently, in the state of Missouri, workers in the private sector are typically not legally protected from sexual orientation discrimination (with the exception of a few local ordinances that prohibit such discrimination); however, there have been recent unsuccessful efforts to change the state law. Likewise, there is currently no federal law that bans discrimination against gay or lesbian workers in private industry.
